What is the maximum amount of social security benefits that a person can receive and still be considered someones dependent? My mother gets SS, but not enough to live on her own, rent an apartment, etc. Does the fact that she receives any SS benefits mean that she cannot be considered my dependent?

Im 23 years old and pay over a hundred dollars per paycheck towards social security. The program is doomed and theres no way I will get a check every month when I retire so why should I be forced to pay? Should’nt we be allowed to opt out and put the money we save towards are own retirement plans or spend the way we wish?
To everyone who gave some BS answer…. blow me. You only made those comments because your old and will be collection SS soon….which i will be paying for. Everyone knows the system is deaply flawed and in danger!

If this person worked in the US for several years and was married to an american citizen but then gets divorced and goes back to his/her country, what happens with the earnings accumulated in the social security?if this person returns to the us after some years still can receive the retirement check from whatever had been accumulated in the SS?…..I assume that you won’t accumulate any credits for your Government pension offset during the time you are working and living in other country, is this correct?..or unless you work for an American company in the country overseas that could count and credit the earnings to your SS?…

After the maximum amount of social security is paid for the year there is no longer this deduction from your paycheck. What happens when you change jobs so there is no longer a cumulative amount paid due to the change from one employer to another.
mannzaformulaone asked:
What happens if I chose not to pay into the Social Security fund? I realize I won’t get any benefits, but I can deal with that part. Are there any legal consequences such as a fine or jail time? I realize that one’s employer automatically takes the money out of your paycheck, but assuming that can be circumvented, does anyone have any information about this?

I did contract work for under someone for under $1000. He has already paid part of the sum, but he’s asking for my social security number before he pays the remaining money. I was under the impression I only have to provide my social security number if he’s my employer. I am very hesitant about giving him this information, especially because it’s only contract work.
