I have to turn in some paperwork to get an apartment and they want me to bring my social security card. However I have no idea where it is. Is the physical card really necessary? I have my birth certificate, drivers license, and a passport, and I know my social by heart.

  1. I’ve never had to show my Social Security card to rent an apartment. Picture ID maybe, but not a SS card.

  2. If they insist, stop by your local SS office. They can give you a print out that should satisfy them.

  3. They shouldn’t need to see the card. They need the number if they do a credit check. If you have your W-2 form or your tax return, that should be good enough if they don’t trust your memory. You don’t want to have to spend hours in the Social Security office just to get a printout.
