My mother receives social security and lives with me. Can I claim her as my dependant?

What is the maximum amount of social security benefits that a person can receive and still be considered someones dependent? My mother gets SS, but not enough to live on her own, rent an apartment, etc. Does the fact that she receives any SS benefits mean that she cannot be considered my dependent?

If someone is getting social security and has a dependant, I know they have to claim it as taxable income, just wondering if thats the only household income if they can also claim an earned income credit? Please list sources if you know them. Thanks so much!

Should social security and medicare be withheld from this paycheck?

Dave asked:

A dependant works for a university and her paystubs have federal taxes withheld, but no social security of medicare. She tells me that the school told her that she doesn’t pay that but she is unsure why. Possibly becasue they are a federal university? I don’t know if that sounds right or not.
If it is incorrect, will she then owe whatever amount at the end of the year?
