The maximum taxable amount will rise to $97,500 in 2007. The Social Security tax rate is not automatically adjusted and remains 6.2 percent.
I’m currently under the max but if I start my new job prior to receiving my severence package will that trigger a notification to my current employer and cause issues as they’ll need to make adjustments for it?
It’s not illegal or wrong to be employed by 2 companies at the same time right?
My friend in HR says she gets notifications on these things and has to make the adjustment. I just want to make sure there’s no auto notification to my employer if I work somewhere else

Social Security tax for state employees?

Nathan asked:

I recently got a report for the history of my earnings in the mail from the Social Security administration and it lists no income for me in 2007 (towards social security). I was a state employee of Maryland that year so am I wondering do state and federal employees not pay social security tax? Am I entitled to anything from the state in the future? How/why does it work this way (assuming this is not a mistake)?

Additionally, since I am not going to continue working as a state employee does this mean those earnings will never count towards my final SS package?

If some foreign national has worked for more than 17 years, she’s now 58, in usa. She paid social security tax, can she get it back? She would never use any of social security benefits. Coz’ she is going back to her country next couple of month.

Thanks
