My mother receives social security and lives with me. Can I claim her as my dependant?

What is the maximum amount of social security benefits that a person can receive and still be considered someones dependent? My mother gets SS, but not enough to live on her own, rent an apartment, etc. Does the fact that she receives any SS benefits mean that she cannot be considered my dependent?

How does Social Security determine my monthly benefit?

Many people retire in their 50’s because it’s a job benefit. Since they are no longer working and paying into social security does that lessen their benefit whereas someone who worked until age 65 paying more into SS? Does the amount you’ve paid into SS over the years determine your final benefit? Will I be penalized for retiring early even though I won’t be eligiable for any SS for years?

How are social security benefits calculated?

On my annual social security report, my income for 6 of the past 19 years were incorrect, significantly lower than they should have been. Are benefits upon retiring based on your average income over your working life, or only based on the last year’s income that you worked? Is it worth the hassle to correct what was on the report? Will those errors impact the monthly benefit I receive upon retiring? I think my former employer cooked the books and didn’t pay SS taxes – is that why the statement is in error? Can I use my old tax returns to prove that I actually made more money than the statement shows? I have a lot of questions but any answers I receive will be greatly appreciated.

How long does it take for a death to be reported to social Security?

NIK-E asked:

My daughters father and I were never married, and shortly after she was born she started receiving social security from his benefits. He was retired veteran and main income was VA and SS. He passed away 2 weeks ago, and I called social security and they say they have no record of his death, but that once they do, the amount she gets every month will automatically go up. Any idea how long it takes for a death to be reported? Her father and I have no contact, so I’m not sure if I need to find the death certificate and send to social security myself.

Social Security benefits lost if I lose permanent residency?

Mememe asked:

Hello,

I am 64 years old and currently collecting Social Security benefits.

I am a permanent resident of the U.S., but am considering immigrating to another (S.E. Asian) country.

If I do this, I assume I will eventually lose my permanent residency.

Will losing my permanent residency affect my SS benefits?

That is, will I NOT be able to collect benefits if I lose my permanent residency?

Thank you!
